Magnetically Manipulated Sample Handling System on Digital Microfluidic Platforms

Herein we present a proof of concept demonstration of magnetic manipulation of an immiscible, microliter-scale ferrofluid droplet over a thin aqueous film on a solid substrate, using an array of square electromagnets.

The presented finite element model aims to help in the development of Lab-on-a-Chip devices which require temperature control. The model simulates the thermal system in such devices to enable in silico validation of designs and geometry optimization, and aims to be a versatile tool supporting multiple temperature control methods.

We present results in rapid solution impedance spectroscopy to detect protein interactions (antibody-antigen) in human serum. Two different serum-antibody mixtures are measured in cuvettes, interfaced with screen-printed electrodes to determine whether the experimental setup can detect differences in composition.

We have developed a microfluidic device capable of hydrodynamically trapping cells over polymer lines which encourage 1D migration based on topographical cues. These lines have been fabricated with both femtosecond laser ablation and dewetting/stamping. This type of precise control will allow precise microfluidic assessment of potential drug targets to limit cancer cell migration.
