Ion Chromatography ICP-Q-MS for the Detection of Arsenic Species in Apple Juice
Thermo Scientific

Interest in the determination of Arsenic species in fruit juices has been triggered by recent media reports in the United States claiming that some apple juices may contain high amounts of Arsenic. Inorganic forms of Arsenic (As3+ and As5+) are highly toxic, whereas the organic forms (e.g. arsenobetaine) are not considered toxic. A robust IC-ICP-MS system was developed and shown to be a highly selective and sensitive technique for determination of trace element species.
Streamlined QbD HPLC Method Development with Automated Data Processing
ACD/Labs

Quality by Design (QbD) has been widely applied to pharmaceutical manufacturing to enhance process robustness, and improve product quality and manufacturing productivity. Recently, there arose tremendous interests from both the pharmaceutical industry and regulatory agents to expand it to analytical methodology.
Characterizing Small Molecules in Biological Extracts using IntelliXtract Data Processing on High Resolution Accurate Mass Time-of-Flight Data
ACD Labs

To detect small molecules in biological extracts, LC/MS performed using high resolution time of flight with accurate mass analysis is a powerful technology. Together with advanced data processing algorithms, accurate mass and relative isotope abundance measurements, molecular formulae can be determined and compounds identified.
The LAB2LAB™Advantage
1Novartis 2TTPLabtech Ltd

Lab2Lab is a novel approach to submitting and transporting samples for analysis across an entire site. Sample tubes are registered and methods selected, an ELN reference is assigned and the sample tube is placed into the “Sender”. The system transports the samples using low pressure compressed air and directs them to the most appropriate analytical instrumentation available. The analytical results are then automatically returned to the originators ELN.

The evaluation, identification, and quantitation of flavones, antioxidants and related nutrients, biogenic amines, and potential contaminants in wine and other foodstuffs provides valuable information on their nutritional and health values.
Analysis of Pesticide Residues in JonaGold Apples Using QuEChERS Approach and Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS)
LECO Corporation

Screening and quantitation of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables is of utmost importance for public health and safety concerns. These commodities can contain hundreds-to-thousands of analytes, making them extremely difficult for the screening and accurate quantitation of pesticide residues.
Analysis of Fruit Commodities by GC-TOFMS and GCxGC-TOFMS Using QuEChERS Approach
LECO Corporation

The availability of fruit commodities from a wide variety of sources has increased the need for rapid and accurate screening for pesticides in fruit. Not all fruit commodities are brought to market under the strict guidelines of the United States Department of Agriculture. Determining whether or not the Environmental Protection Agency tolerances for various pesticides have been violated is important in the risk assessment for consumers in the United States.

Application Notes
Analysis of Fat-Soluble Vitamins from Food Matrix for Nutrition Labeling
Agilent Technologies

Labelling vitamins in a matrix like infant formula is a mandatory requirement by the FDA. The diversity in the chemical nature of vitamins makes concurrent extraction and analysis of all vitamins challenging. Due to this, analysis of water soluble and fat soluble vitamins will be usually performed separately. This Application Note describes a sen¬sitive and robust method for simulta¬neous determination of nine fat soluble vitamins with UV detection.
Analysis of Natural and Artificial Vanilla Preparations
Agilent Technologies

Vanilla extract is widely used as a flavoring ingredient in foods and beverages. It contains approximately 200 substances. Since natural vanilla extract is limited and prices are high, artificial vanilla flavorings are often used. Due to quality and price concerns, it is important to differentiate between these two.
Analysis of Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid and Benzoic Acid in Orange Juice
Agilent Technologies

While some fruit naturally contain ascorbic acid, citric acid and benzoic acid, these components are added additionally added to fruit juices to increase the shelf life. Although the regulatory limit for benzoic acid in fruit juices is 400 to 600 µg/mL, concerns exist regarding the liberation of carci¬nogenic benzene by reaction of benzoic acid with ascorbic acid under certain conditions.
Determining Total Sugar Content in Maple Syrup to Meet FDA Nutrition Labeling Requirements
Agilent Technologies

Nutrition labels on food items provide valuable information to consumers. To ensure authenticity, the Food and Drug Administration checks the reported values on the nutrition labels. Due to advances in chromatography and universal analysis of sugars by refractive index detectors (RI), RI is the preferred method for sugar analysis. A total sugar analysis method for commercially available maple syrup was performed using Agilent HiPlex Ca Column and Agilent 1260 Infinity RI Detector.
Analysis of Acharicides in Honey
Agilent Technologies

To prevent economic losses beekeepers treat their colonies with acaricides. The use of these acaricides inside beehives implies a risk of direct pollution of honey and other hive products, therefore maximum residue levels on honey have been fixed in many countries to protect consumers.
Two-Dimensional HPLC Combined with On-Line SPE for Determination of Sudan Dyes I–IV in Chili Oil
Dionex - Part of Thermo Fisher Scientific

Although use of Sudan dyes in food is restricted, they are nevertheless sometimes added to foods to improve the appearance and command a higher price. Because Sudan dyes may create health problems such as genotoxic and carcinogenic effects, concerns over contamination of Sudan dyes has increased awareness and testing for these compounds.
Fast Determination of Anthocyanins in Pomegranate Juice
Thermo - Part

Due to their strong antioxidant properties, anthocyanins are of considerable interest. Pomegranate juice (PJ) has been reported to contain 3× more antioxidant activity than green tea. Due to the high demand for pomegranates, adulteration of PJ has become widespread. Manufacturers have attempted to extend the limited supply by blending with filler ingredients such as cane sugar, corn syrup sweeteners, and lower-quality juices containing sorbitol, malic acid, and sucrose.
Analysis of Fruit Juice Adulterated with Medium Invert Sugar from Beets
Dionex - Part of Thermo Fisher Scientific

Fruit juice adulteration presents an economic and regulatory problem. The United States orange juice industry estimates that orange juice sales gross more than one billion dollars annually. The most common forms of adulteration include simple dilution and blending of inexpensive and synthetically produced juices into the more expensive ones.
Potassium Bromate in Bakery Products
Cecil Instruments Ltd

Potassium bromate is recognised as one of the best dough conditioners in the bakery industry. Scientific evidence surfaced in 1990, implicating bromate as a possible carcinogen. In response the United Nations Joint Food and Agricultural Organisation and the WHO reduced bromate residuals to less than 5 parts per billion (ppb) in finished products.
Simultaneous Analysis of Anions and Cations by Tandem Chromatography with Conductivity Detection
Cecil Instruments Ltd

Tandem chromatography is emerging as a powerful technique to double the output of HPLC equipment by simultaneously carrying out two different analyses on the same sample. The principle is straightforward: the sample is split in two at the injection port, and each aliquot is eluted on a different column and analysed by a different detector.
