The International Diabetes Federation estimates that more than 285 million people world-wide have diabetes and 438 million people will have this disease within 20 years. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) accounts for more than 90% of all diabetes and is characterized by insulin resistance combined with relatively reduced insulin secretion.
