Industry research has shown that pharmaceutical manufacturers lose over 30% of brand sales due to non-adherence, costing the industry billions of dollars in lost revenue. Pharmaceutical companies have long believed that drug adherence was the result of patient knowledge, leading manufacturers to develop marketing strategies focused on patient education. However, recent industry findings have shown that adherence is not solely correlated to patient knowledge and is more affected by factors such as financial incentives (e.g., reduced out-of-pocket expenses), individual behavioral patterns and a variety of coaching techniques to keep patients on the medication as prescribed. In order for patients to fully benefit from a drug, it is essential for manufacturers to implement or evolve adherence programs to incorporate new behavioral patterns and trends.
