Patient advocacy is a rapidly developing field which incorporates building and maintaining collaborative, mutually beneficial partnerships with key patient supporters and professional associations. It also serves as a means for providing patients with information and support to navigate the increasingly complex world of healthcare. The FDA recently held a public workshop aimed at incorporating patient preferences into innovative and marked medical devices; one of several patient centric initiatives. Many pharmaceutical and biotechnology organizations have had great success in developing patient advocacy relations and engagement teams, while some in the medical device industry are still working to develop a practical framework for this vital function.
