The University of Washington GS-GRC intends to scale to approximately eighteen Genome Analyzers over the next few months and, in order to make the most of this investment, investigators realized they required a commercial Lab Information Management System (LIMS).

The requirements for a LIMS that would suit the center included:

• The ability to handle high volume of next generation sequencing data in a high throughput center
• End-to-end lab information management functionality
• Reliable and comprehensive sample tracking capabilities
• A short time frame to get from installation to production
• An existing integration to Illumina’s Genome Analyzer
• An ability to scale and adapt as technologies and workflows change

“We had to feel confident that the system we chose for our next generation sequencing center could be deployed on an accelerated timeline, while maintaining the ability to adapt to constantly evolving next generation sequencing technology and workflows. We chose Geneus from GenoLogics, and we have been processing samples for several months with no interruptions,” said Dr. Mark Rieder, principal investigator at the GS-GRC.

The GenoLogics solution is currently installed, and within two months from the installation date it was ensuring sample traceability. GenoLogics is working closely with the University of Washington bioinformatics team to enable users with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). With these APIs and some guidance from GenoLogics, the team has been able to accelerate their implementation and adoption timeline significantly, and increase the overall value users can extract from the system.

Geneus is a highly configurable and flexible lab information and data management system that supports workflows across multiple technology platforms including next generation sequencing instruments. It provides genomics facilities with an end-to-end solution, from sample and workflow management to automating pipelines, and consolidation of data to enable analysis.
