Agilent Technologies Inc. has announced that it has allied with the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, in its campaign to redesign and rebuild its chemistry and chemical engineering laboratories.
The Chemical Science Laboratories for the 21st Century project, now under construction in Latimer Hall, will be equipped with a comprehensive collection of Agilent's latest high-performance chromatography and molecular spectroscopy instruments and software, providing students with daily access to some of the most sophisticated laboratory equipment available today.
"This redevelopment campaign integrates modern laboratory infrastructure with a complete rethinking of our curriculum and methods for delivering instruction," said professor Richard A. Mathies, dean of UC Berkeley's College of Chemistry.
Mathies continued, "We set out to create a facility that will enhance learning for all our undergrads-not just the chemistry and science majors-and empower a new generation of scientists and industry leaders. These new instruments make up the foundation of our new instructional core facility, which will help facilitate interactive learning and promote the latest analytical measurement practices and processes for generations to come."
The university purchased Agilent's comprehensive instrument package as part of a multimillion dollar initiative to redesign and rebuild the undergraduate chemistry laboratories-a facility that had not been upgraded for nearly 50 years.
"We are extraordinarily pleased to join forces with UC Berkeley in educating and inspiring a new generation of students and future scientists," said Jim Lynch, Agilent's director of academic programs for the Americas.
Lynch continued, "We will continue to provide ongoing support and collaborate with Dean Mathies and his team as they fortify UCB's prominence among academic laboratories worldwide."
The new collection of instruments features a complete portfolio of products for the diverse needs of the teaching laboratory.
Key components of the collection include automated instrumentation and software to efficiently process large volumes of experiments.
Agilent's latest GC/MS, GC, LC, FT-IR and MP-AES technologies are also part of the collection.
