Strategic Applications of Flow Chemistry within Drug Discovery

Despite the significant growth of interest in Flow Chemistry, it is often challenging to integrate this into research programs. Given the fast paced nature of drug discovery, and the growing constraint on resources, it is important to recognize opportunites to utilize Flow Chemistry at times when it can bring the maximum benefit to the program under study. This talk will look at several scenarios where this has been implemented within Pfizer. Firstly, one of the key interests is the opportunity to rapidly expand into novel chemical space, which is important both from a proprietary and pharmacological properties standpoint. Development of robust flow methodologies with a particular focus on library generation offers a unique opportunity to do this. Secondly, one of the most significant advantages of working in Flow is the ability to work with hazardous reagents, and examples of this will also be presented. Finally, expediting compounds as they progress is enabled through use of Flow by simply “scaling out” processes as opposed to “scaling up”. This talk will touch on the interaction between medicinal chemistry and process chemistry, and look at some of the benefits of screening chemistries to make them more amenable to flow with this in mind.
