New Technology for Extending HPLC Column Life and Improving Chromatography

HPLC and UHPLC are conventional analytical tools used in many labs to separate and analyze dissolved components in solution. Injection of samples containing particulate will eventually block the column inlet, cause high column back pressure, and shorten the normal lifetime of the column. Build-up of non-dissolved particulates on the head of the column, which continue to dissolve, can cause chromatographic interference including ghost peaks and baseline drift.

One solution to column plugging and chromatographic interference is sample filtration; but sample filtration is not without risk. One cannot be sure how much longer a column will last if filtration is used.

Pall Corporation has introduced a "next generation" syringe filter which can extend UHPLC column life over 100 times, while not causing interference due to extractables, even in methods as sensitive as LCMS. New column life testing will be reviewed as well as analytical interference in LCMS.
