Getting Maximum Information from Small Samples—How Capillary IC Improves Forensic Analysis

Forensic casework presents special challenges to analytical chemists. Frequently, sample sizes are very limited, so great care must be taken in sample collection, handling, and analysis to minimize risks of sample loss and sample contamination, and to ensure that reliable results are obtained in a timely manner. In this session, Dr. Leon Barron discusses analytical methods he has developed at King’s College London, in collaboration with the London Metropolitan Police, to determine inorganic tracer species in forensic samples such as shell casings, latent fingerprints, and human sweat. He talks about his use of traditional-scale and capillary scale IC, and explain the advantages associated with the use of capillary IC technology.
