The UN decision was annouced on 4 July 2012 by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) which since several years has been proposing to mark with an International Year the centenaries of the discovery of X-ray diffraction by Max von Laue in 1912 and of the formulation of Bragg's Law in 1913.

Everybody at the ESRF congratulates Gautam R. Desiraju, President of the IUCr, and Sine Larsen, former ESRF Director of Research and President of the IUCR when the initiative was launched!
The ESRF will join the IUCr in planning opportunities in 2014 to stimulate and ignite interest in crystallography amongst students, scientists and the general public.
