Mumps virus is a common childhood disease that is highly contagious. Transmission is by aerosol and direct contact.

Symptoms include swelling of the salivary and parotid glands. It is a vaccine-preventable disease, however recent outbreaks have occurred in the US due to unvaccinated clusters.
