Agilent Supports Peking University's Environmental Science Research

Work aims to understand, abate pollution in China.

Agilent Technologies Inc. has announced that it has made a donation to Peking University's College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (CESE) to help advance the school's research in air, water and soil pollution.

The college houses China's State Key Joint Laboratory of Environmental Simulation and Pollution Control, and the Key Laboratory of Water and Sediment Sciences for China's Ministry of Education. Agilent's donation supports the construction of a new environmentally "green" academic building on the university campus.

"CESE of Peking University is committed to applying our excellent fundamental research for solving environmental problems, and the collaboration with Agilent will help us to achieve this goal," said Dr. Tong Zhu, dean and professor of the CESE, and director for the university's Centre for Environment and Health.

Dr. Zhu and his distinguished team of faculty and scholars are prolific authors and have been awarded numerous scientific industry awards. Their research focuses on the areas of air chemistry, atmospheric environmental stimulation and pollution control, water and sediment, environmental management and sustainable development, environment and health, environmental biological technologies, waste water treatment, and solid waste treatment.

The new building will be home to the first teaching and research facility at CESE and will provide unique education opportunities and research space for teachers and students. While cultivating future environmental leaders, the college will support national and international environmental management decision-making research, promoting the development of innovative environmental technology.

"We are honored to support Peking University's important research on environmental pollution," said Mike McMullen, president of Agilent's Chemical Analysis Group. "This gift reflects our deep and abiding commitment to make a social contribution in China and throughout the world, and build upon our strong relationship with Peking University."

McMullen and Chai-Hock Teng, Agilent's vice president and general manager of Greater China Chemical Analysis Group, recently visited the campus to participate in a donation ceremony at the university. The building is now in the early stages of construction.

The college has led various research projects for Beijing and Guangdong provincial governments focusing on air quality research and control. It was instrumental in assisting China's efforts to improve air quality for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and has been actively involved in the efforts to phase out ozone depletion substances in China.
