Taking real-time PCR one step forward researcher at TATAA Biocenter has performed a 3-way expression profiling study of the metabolism of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast).
While regular (2-way) expression profiling, where a set of samples are analyzed for many genes, is challenging to most researchers, the TATAA scientists analyzed the expression of many (18) genes at 8 different time points after addition of glucose to yeast grown in ethanol of 4 different strains. The experimental design generates a cube of data.
The company said that using GenEx software the data were analyzed using augmented principal component analysis, which revealed important co-regulations between the metabolic genes, including their sensitivities to genetic modifications. This novel 3-way approach to study expression pathways is expected to become very important in studies of potential drug targets, biological responses, and genetically modified species.
