The Abbott PLEX-ID system is the only high-throughput technology that offers rapid, broad identification of known or unknown emerging organisms direct from sample, without the need for culture, enrichment or staining.

The PLEX-ID system provides the ability to screen for thousands of  adventitious agents, such as bacteria, fungi or viruses, in a single analysis with access to results within 8 hours from preparation to identification.  The PLEX-ID is commonly used during the Biopharmaceutical manufacturing process to test for Cell banking, thru to in-process testing and environmental monitoring.

The PLEX-ID technology uses broad PCR coupled with Mass Spectrometer detection to detect and determine the base composition of amplified primer pairs (amplicons) that are used to interrogate conserved regions that flank variable regions of highly conserved genes. The base composition determined for each amplicons is then searched against a database to determine the organisms present. This multilocus approach provides the ability to distinguish between closely related species as well as identify single nucleotide polymorphisms or mutations.
