Analysis of Common Preservatives in Personal Care Products by HPLC with UV Detection

Parabens refer to a group of p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters that are widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in many everyday products due to their broad spectrum of activity as well as their chemical and thermal stability. Recent studies have found that some parabens exhibit weak endocrine disrupting effects which can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer, among other effects. These effects can be further intensified by the ability of parabens to be absorbed by the skin without being broken down by esterase enzymes.
