Investigating Homelessness
The Department of English and Kelly Writers House present a conversation between author Jennifer Egan and Dennis Culhane of the School of Social Policy and Practice, who studies homelessness and assisted housing policy. They will discuss how social science research and investigative journalism can combine to consider what storytelling can be done to capture the present situation of homelessness.

This is a campuswide week of events, lectures, and volunteer opportunities designed to educate and inspire action related to environmental justice, climate, and nature-based solutions. This year’s theme is Restore & Regenerate.

“Barbara Earl Thomas: The Illuminated Body”
A new Arthur Ross Gallery exhibition of work by artist Barbara Earl Thomas features cut-paper portraits reminiscent of stained glass and an immersive installation constructed with intricately cut material.

Artist Barbara Earl Thomas gives a tour of her exhibition, “The Illuminated Body,” at the Arthur Ross Gallery. On view through May 21, it is funded by a Pew Center for Arts & Heritage grant.
Thousands of cutouts create swirling patterns in the Tyvek material that envelopes “The Transformation Room,” a room-within-a-room in the Gallery.

Provost John L. Jackson, Jr. (center) attended the exhibition opening, along with nearly 300 people at the reception and discussion.
The Arthur Ross Gallery exhibit is the first time Thomas’ work has been shown in Philadelphia.
For “The Illuminated Body,” Thomas specifically responded to the Arthur Ross Gallery’s Venetian Gothic architecture.
The exhibit includes a series of nine large cut-paper portraits and three works of hand-blown glass.
