This year’s CUNY Guggenheim fellows are interdisciplinary artist Bang-Guel Han and philosophy scholar Barbara Montero, both of the College of Staten Island, and art historian Claire Bishop, of the CUNY Graduate Center.

  • Gov. Hochul Sends Letters to High School Seniors Encouraging Students to Complete the FAFSA

    Gov. Kathy Hochul today announced that letters will be distributed to high school seniors to provide them with helpful tips and resources to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Letters will also be sent to high school principals urging them to make sure each senior student has the resources needed to access financial aid. The mailings are a part of Financial Aid Awareness Month, which Gov. Hochul launched at the beginning of this month.

  • CUNY Receives Over $15 Million in Federal Funding from Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, Members of Congress

    The City University of New York has received more than $15 million from Congressional Omnibus Appropriations to support 12 projects and programs across nine campuses, including the Central Office. The funds, an increase of 25% over last year, will help finance workforce development initiatives, upgrade STEM lab facilities, expand academic programs, strengthen CUNY’s emergency response protocols and address infrastructure upgrades, including the preservation of the national landmark Louis Armstrong House Museum, the former home of the country’s first Black popular music icon.

    Earlier this year, CUNY announced that it will become one of the first universities to designate Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Lunar New Year and Diwali as holidays on the official school calendar. The University adopted this policy to ensure that students could honor their heritage and maintain religious observance without sacrificing their studies. The policy was also the result of coordinated advocacy and lobbying on the part of CUNY students.

  • CUNY Celebrates its Distinguished Poets for National Poetry Month

    To commemorate National Poetry Month, the City University of New York is recognizing the diverse poets who have attended and taught at CUNY colleges and have earned the school the unofficial title of Poetry U. The University’s poetic legacy encompasses past icons such as Audre Lorde, a Hunter College alumna who taught at three CUNY colleges, as well as two longtime CUNY faculty members who serve on the board of the prestigious Academy of American Poets, the organization which first launched this month of celebration in 1996.

  • Petrie Foundation Awards CUNY $1 Million to Launch New FAFSA Completion Program Amid Unprecedented Delays in National Rollout

    The City University of New York is taking proactive steps to address significant challenges posed by the delayed and chaotic rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. With $1 million in funding from the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, CUNY will join forces with the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and key institutional partners like the New York and Queens public library systems to reach 100,000 high school seniors and current CUNY students and help them complete the FAFSA, which is required for any student to receive financial aid.

  • Mellon Foundation Awards CUNY $5 Million to Expand Black, Race and Ethnic Studies Initiative

    The City University of New York has received $5 million from the Mellon Foundation to expand CUNY’s innovative Black, Race and Ethnic Studies Initiative (BRESI), which was created with support from the foundation to drive change across CUNY’s 25 campuses and advance racial and social justice initiatives. The latest grant will allow CUNY to launch New York’s first dedicated graduate degree program in Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies (BRES). CUNY was the largest recipient of 95 grantees awarded more than $18 million by Mellon for race, ethnic, gender and sexuality studies, reflecting the University’s unique commitment to advancing the cause of social justice.

  • 14 CUNY Campuses Will Serve as Polling Sites for Presidential Primary Voters

    The City University of New York will again open its campuses to New Yorkers voting in the U.S. presidential primary election. From March 23 to March 30, 10 CUNY colleges will serve as early voting polling sites for the primary election; six will be open for voting on Election Day on April 2.
