Sensitive and Reliable Method for Direct Identification of Fluoroacetate in Water

Read time: Less than a minute

Application Note 276: Direct Determination of Fluoroacetate in Water by IC-MS demonstrates excellent recovery and detection of FA at sub-ppb concentrations using a Reagent-Free™ Ion Chromatography (RFIC™) system coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) detection. The MSQ Plus™ spectrometer provides molecular ion analyte selectivity, and the selected ion monitoring (SIM) function achieves good low-level quantification.

Fluoroacetate is a strong metabolic poison that is banned or restricted in many countries. Analyses for this compound have been previously performed using various methods, including gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and fluoride ion selective electrode analytical techniques. Many of these techniques relied upon derivatization prior to analysis and lacked adequate sensitivity for low-level detection.
