LoGiCal® reference materials from LGC Standards have enabled specialist instrument manufacturer Spark Holland in Emmen, the Netherlands, to establish an online SPE-LC/MSMS method for the analysis of synthetic cannabinoids.

Business Development Manager Martin Sibum explained: “We develop applications for a variety of markets, including clinical pharma, toxicology and forensics, and are involved in screening for drugs of abuse. The use of designer drugs is on the increase, and we needed to develop a quantitative online SPE-LC/MSMS method for the analysis of synthetic cannabinoids, or ‘Spice’ compounds. These compounds are relatively new, and LGC Standards was quite unique in being able to supply reference standards for five Spice compounds from stock.”

“Availability of these reference materials allowed us to quickly and easily prepare calibration standards for each compound, and to develop an automated SPE method on a Symbiosis™ system. Within two days, we had established an online SPE-LC/MSMS method for the quantification of five Spice compounds in urine. This was the first time we had worked with LGC Standards, and we achieved excellent results using LoGiCal reference materials. CVs were less than 5 % - and accuracy within ±10 % - for all compounds and concentrations, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99. LGC Standards was really helpful and showed an interested in the results, so it was an excellent first collaboration.”
