Shimadzu Scientific Instruments has announced the release of its iMLayer matrix vapor automated sample treatment (matrix deposition) system. Used in conjunction with Shimadzu’s MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers, the iMLayer provides a precise, high-resolution method for high spatial resolution imaging mass spectrometry.

The IMLayer uses vaporization to deposit matrix to tissue slices using what is called the “dry coat” method. In this method, matrix powder is heated under vacuum to the boiling point of the matrix crystals.

The sample positioned above the matrix then becomes coated with a thin layer of matrix. A laser positioned above the sample is utilized to control the thickness of the matrix layer, resulting in reproducible matrix deposition.

Utilizing the dry coat method provides for creation of finer matrix crystal grains as well as improved reproducibility of matrix coatings via automatic coating thickness control. In addition, the iMLayer features simple touch-panel operation with pre-programmed methods for commonly used matrices.

Combining the iMLayer with the high-performance MALDI-7090 results in the most powerful and user-friendly imaging platform for obtaining high-resolution images.
