Webinar Summary

Jarring has been a preferred way to store food, enable its distribution and prolong shelf life for decades. To guarantee a robust and long-lasting seal, and therefore protect the contents from spoilage, many metal twist closure lids are covered by a PVC gasket containing 25-45 % by weight of plasticizers and additives

However, these plasticizers may migrate into the foodstuffs contained within, especially following contact for extended periods of time. For producers and manufacturers there are important questions to consider such as to what degree are plasticizers migrating into their products and if they are, do the levels at which they are present pose a risk to health?

Development of a reliable method that is both sensitive and selective to quantify the main plasticizers used in the closure gaskets in the gaskets themselves and in complex food matrices, such as sauces, is therefore highly desirable.

In this webinar we will be discussing:
  • Development of an LC-MS method for detection of plasticizers from PVC jar gaskets
  • Comparison of ESI and APCI techniques for optimal detection sensitivity
  • Multi-residue detection following contact with various foodstuffs
  • Validation of the method for detection of plasticizers within the foods themselves
