The UK High-Field Solid-State NMR Facility

Solid-State NMR at 850 MHz and 1 GHz: A World-leading UK Facility to deliver Advances in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science and Physics

The award of a £3.9M grantLink opens in a new window from EPSRCLink opens in a new window and BBSRCLink opens in a new window: enabled the Facility to start operation on February 1st 2010.

The original 850 MHz widebore solid-state NMR system (4 channel HFXY with 11 MAS (0.7 to 7 mm) probes and a DOR and a static probe), as supplied by BrukerLink opens in a new window, is sited in the Magnetic Resonance Centre at Millburn House, University of Warwick. Additional funding was provided by the University of Warwick including via funding through Birmingham Science City Advanced Materials Projects 1 and 2Link opens in a new window supported by Advantage West Midlands (AWM)Link opens in a new window and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). A 1 GHz standard-bore (4 channel HFXY with 8 MAS probes (0.7 to 7 mm)) is available since 2021.

Following a bid by a consortium of 7 UK universities, contract funding (PR140003) with a service level agreement (SLA) has been awarded as an EPSRCLink opens in a new window (with 10% funding by BBSRCLink opens in a new window) National Research FacilityLink opens in a new window for a further 3+2 years of operation from January 2015.

The facility continues to operate as a National Research Facility until January 2025 with EPSRC (and 15% BBSRC) funding EP/T015063/1 The PIs of this grant have recently been awarded £17M of funding to procure the first 1.2 GHz NMR system in the UK.
