Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced a new two-dimensional (2D) high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for determination of Sudan dyes I, II, III, and IV in curry paste without off-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) sample pretreatment.

Application Note 1023: Determination of Sudan Dyes I–IV in Curry Paste demonstrates that this approach, which uses a dual HPLC system to significantly reduce the time and labor required for the analysis, and thus reduce the cost per analysis.

The total runtime for this new method is just 25 minutes. The off-line sample preparation step is merely a simple sample extraction using acetonitrile followed by filtration.

This 2D approach precludes the need for more rigorous off-line SPE sample preparation. This method also reduces the amount of equipment previously needed to perform similar testing.
