Benchmark Dose Modeling for the Safety Assessment of Novel Foods
The safety assessment of novel foods (NFs) usually relies on a reference point to establish the safe maximum daily intake by humans. For that purpose, from 2009, EFSA has been recommending the use of the benchmark dose (BMD) approach. An overview of when, why and how this approach is employed in the assessment of NFs was carried out. Among all the NFs published until now, only seven assessments mention the use of the BMD approach, but only five used it as a reference point. The rare use of the BMD approach in NFs risk assessment evidences the existence of challenges.
