Analysis of Microplastics in Wastewater, Sediment & Fauna using FTIR Imaging

Contamination in our waterways, soil, air, and food from microplastics (1 μm to 5 mm in size) is gaining significant public interest due largely to its emergence as an environmental and potential human health threat.

This study describes a new method of quantifying different types of microplastics in environmental samples using FTIR imaging. The method utilized was able to successfully recover, identify, and quantify microplastics in organic-rich samples such as sediment, water, and fish.

The method utilized FTIR imaging, combined with the MPhunter software and proved to be a rapid and accurate way to automatically identify and quantify microplastics and other materials.
