A University of Ottawa study challenges the current theoretical model of the composition of the universe. This discovery challenges the prevailing understanding of the universe, namely that roughly 27% of it is composed of dark matter and less than 5% is ordinary matter, with the remainder being dark energy.
Rajendra Gupta, a physics professor at the Faculty of Science, states that “In standard cosmology, the accelerated expansion of the universe is said to be caused by dark energy but is in fact due to the weakening forces of nature as it expands, not due to dark energy.”

Mitigating the impact of climate change and shipping in the Arctic
Arctic shipping in Canada has more than tripled since 1990, and is expected to increase exponentially as climate change causes more sea ice to melt, making waterways easier to navigate. University of Ottawa researcher Jackie Dawson from the Faculty of Arts is heading back north to study the impact and risk of marine shipping in Arctic Canada, thanks to support from the National Killam Program.
Through her new research project, Inuit Qaujisrnirmut Pilirijjutit (Knowledge) on Artic Shipping Risks, the new Killam Fellow will collaborate with local Inuit to assess the impact of increased ship traffic on the surrounding marine mammal and human populations, predict future conditions and identify risk mitigation strategies.
New research suggests that our universe has no dark matter
Two innovators recognized with early career researcher awards
Professor Eva Hemmer is developing next-generation nanomaterials that could revolutionize therapeutic and diagnostic — known as theranostic — technologies. Professor Florian Martin-Bariteau’s prolific research is advancing debate on technology law and policy.
Their field-defining contributions have earned them Early Career Researcher of the Year Awards from the University of Ottawa’s Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI).
