Mapping Tumor Immune Cell Populations Points to Immunotherapy Targets
Tumors are a complex mixture of many different cell types, including immune cells known collectively as tumor-infiltrating myeloid cells. These cells represent alternative targets for immunotherapy, but their role in tumors is still poorly understood. To shed light on this under-examined family of immune cells, researchers used single-cell sequencing to map the landscape of myeloid cells in tumors from patients with lung cancer.

Vaccine Progress for Virus Behind “The Kissing Disease”
Progress has been made towards developing a vaccine for the Epstein-Barr virus, a herpesvirus that causes infectious mononucleosis and is associated with certain cancers.

Mimicking DNA With MOFs
Scientists have begun making "metal-organic frameworks" made of building blocks that typically make up biomolecules, e.g. amino acids for proteins or nucleic acids for DNA. Apart from the traditional MOF use in chemical catalysis, these biologically derived MOFs can be also used as models for complex biomolecules that are difficult to isolate and study with other means.

Turning Tumors Into Cancer Vaccine Factories
A novel approach to cancer immunotherapy involves injecting immune stimulants directly into a tumor to teach the immune system to destroy it and other tumor cells throughout the body.

Influenza Vaccine Research Progress and Opportunities Go Under the Magnifying Glass
Experts in immunology, virology, epidemiology, and vaccine development detail efforts to improve seasonal influenza vaccines and ultimately develop a universal influenza vaccine.

Blocking Protein’s Activity Restores Cognition in Old Mice
Brain cells called microglia serve as the brain’s garbage crew, scarfing up bits of cellular debris. But their underperformance in aging brains contributes to neurodegeneration. Could a strategy to restore this homeostasis be on the horizon?

Food Additive May Impact Flu Vaccine Effectiveness
Scientists have linked a common food preservative to an altered immune response that possibly hinders flu vaccines.

Therapeutic Vaccine Targets Underlying HPV Infection and Precancer Lesions
A potential new immune-based therapy to treat precancers in the cervix completely eliminated both the lesion and the underlying HPV infection in a third of women enrolled in a clinical trial.

Vaccine Has "Almost Wiped Out" Cervical Pre-cancer
A study of the vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) has found a reduction of nearly 90% in the cancer-causing virus since the treatment was brought into Scottish schools a decade ago.

Immunotherapy Pulls HIV Out of Hiding From T Cells
An all-in-one immunotherapy approach shows promise, as it not only kicks HIV out of hiding in the immune system, but also kills it. The key lies in immune cells designed to recognize an entirely different virus.
