PhD Student
at The University of Manchester
Annet is a Ugandan PhD student at The University of Manchester, investigating normal brain tissue changes after irradiation. She did her bachelor’s degree in biology and for her final project, she investigated how mitochondrial DNA mutations link to inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction in an aging mouse model. She then pursued a master’s in radiation biology, where she investigated how the MRE11-RAD50-NBS1 complex (in DNA damage response) is affected upon conventional or FLASH (ultra-high-dose rates) irradiation in vitro. After, she taught radiobiology at Uganda Christian University for one year, before starting her PhD. Annet is supervised by four primary investigators, but her principal supervisor is Dr. Ben Dickie, who is a neuroimaging scientist with an interest in cerebrovascular function. He develops new ways to image blood perfusion and vessel permeability using MRI and applies these techniques to study changes in neurological diseases such as dementia and stroke. Recently, he has begun working on effects of radiotherapy on brain vasculature, and is working towards understanding the role of neurovascular unit dysfunction in radiation-induced cognitive impairment.
