Side Effects of Parkinson’s Medication Linked to Defective Metabolism of L-Dopa
Until now, the reason why the drug levodopa (L-Dopa), which reduces the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, declines in efficacy after a few years’ use has been unknown. A side effect that then often occur is involuntary movements. A Swedish–French collaboration, led from Uppsala University, has now been able to connect the problems with defective metabolism of L-Dopa in the brain.

Comprehensive Database of Head and Neck Cancers Established
Researchers have clarified the contribution of key cancer-associated genes, proteins and signaling pathways in thread and neck cancers while proposing potential new treatment strategies.

Cancer Cells Hibernate To Evade the Effects of Chemotherapy
In a new paper published in Cell, researchers report that all cancer cells – rather than just a subset – have the ability to switch to a protective state in response to a threat, such as chemotherapy.

Mechanical Gut Simplifies Infection Studies
Researchers have found a way to mimic conditions in intestines, giving them a mechanical model for the real-time growth of bacterial infections. This simplifies simulations of the human intestine, making it more practical to find treatments for diseases like infectious diarrhea.

Gut Inflammation Triggered by Chemicals in E-Cigarette
Touted by makers as a “healthy” alternative to traditional nicotine cigarettes, new research indicates the chemicals found in e-cigarettes disrupt the gut barrier and trigger inflammation in the body, potentially leading to a variety of health concerns.

Where Did Antibiotic Resistance Come From Originally?
By comparing thousands of bacterial genomes, scientists have traced back the evolutionary history of antibiotic resistance genes. In almost all cases where an origin could be determined, the gene started to spread from bacteria that, themselves, can cause disease.

Cell Biologists Decipher Signal That Ensures No Chromosome Is Left Behind
Researchers use a novel probe to witness how a "matchmaker" molecule puts the brake on cell division until components are ready to be split.

Gene for Rice Adaption to Low Soil Nitrogen Is Discovered
Chinese scientists from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have found a gene that plays an important role in helping rice adapt to low soil nitrogen.

Severe Food Poisoning Symptoms May Be Toxin's Accidental Side Effect
E. coli food poisoning is one of the worst food poisonings, causing bloody diarrhea and kidney damage. But all the carnage might be just an unintended side effect according to new research.

DNA-Editing Extends Lifespan in Mouse Model of Progeria
Researchers have successfully used a DNA-editing technique to extend the lifespan of mice with the genetic variation associated with progeria, a rare genetic disease that causes extreme premature aging in children and can significantly shorten their life expectancy.
