Blood banks are essential links in the healthcare supply chain around the globe. Thermo Fisher Scientific recently installed its 1000th blood banking centrifuge in India at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.
A core part of the blood banking process, centrifuges separate whole blood into four life saving components: red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and white blood. Thermo Scientific blood banking centrifuges, such as the Thermo Scientific Heraeus Cryofuge centrifuge series, include innovative technologies such as energy-saving wind-shield rotors, flexible adapters to accommodate multiple blood bag formats and hook adapters for leuco-reduction and small volumes such as umbilical cord blood.
“There is no substitute for human blood – assuring a constant supply is paramount. We are seeing significant growth in blood banking solutions as facilities need to store, process and administer donor blood to patients,” said Amol Deshpande, general manager for corporate marketing for Thermo Fisher Scientific. “Our 1000th blood banking centrifuge installation marks an important milestone and underscores the increasing need in India and the region for a robust blood supply pipeline as a central component in today’s healthcare infrastructure.”

Thermo Fisher has also been involved with India’s AIDS Control program and has collaborated with the National AIDS Control Organization to upgrade the nation’s blood processing and testing facilities with updated centrifuges in order to help provide safe blood components for transfusion to patients across the country.
