The tumor microenvironment supports the development of tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) which are characterized by an immune-suppressive phenotype. TAMs can facilitate the proliferation of tumor cells and are able to suppress anti-tumor immune responses within the tumor microenvironment, making them a highly attractive target for the development of innovative cancer immunotherapies.
