"Stress granules" belong in the cellular toolbox of survival strategies. Proteins and RNA huddle together into membrane-less blobs when the cell is threatened, a mechanism which is also critical for proper maternal mRNA storage, synaptic plasticity, tumor progression and neurodegeneration.

These previously invisible basic genetic processes have been captured for the first time, using fluorescence microscopy.
