Professor of Pediatric Gastroenterology
at University of Cambridge
Matthias is a Clinician Scientist specializing in paediatric gastroenterology, with a research focus on human intestinal stem cell biology and its role in gut health and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). His work explores how epigenetic mechanisms, particularly DNA methylation, regulate epithelial cell function and contribute to disease progression. Leading a research group dedicated to improving treatments for children with Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis, Matthias leverages patient-derived mucosal and induced pluripotent stem cells gut organoid models to develop innovative therapeutic strategies. He is passionate about translational medicine and aims to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and clinical application, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.
