Teach Me in 10 – Why Synthetic Biology Will Eat Your Fields With Dr Jake Wintermute

Synthetic biology is a multidisciplinary research area that combines fields such as biology, engineering, chemistry, bioinformatics and systems biology. It is advancing at an impressive rate, largely due to the recent developments in genome engineering and genome editing in the post-genomic era. Synthetic biology influences various aspects of human life, such as modern medicine, drug development, agriculture, working to prevent climate change and even the chemistry of household products such as laundry detergent.

In this installment of Teach Me in 10, we are delighted to welcome Dr Jake Wintermute, a systems biologist that works for INSERM France and teaches part of the Synthetic Biology Master's Program at the CRI in Paris. "My current research interests include the biology of aging, synthetic biology tools for drug discovery, and the human skin microbiome. I want to design, optimize and control microbial metabolism, usually with genetic techniques and usually with some application in mind, even it that application is far off," says Dr Wintermute.
