Human stem cells have been successfully used as treatments for blood cancers for decades, but translating the promise of cell-based treatments for solid tumors or other diseases has been a slow endeavor. This is because of the scientific challenges and clinical impracticalities associated with turning human cells into treatments. Cell-based therapies today use blood stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells (adult pluripotent stem cells found in many different tissues), human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and immune cells such as T cells or natural killer cells, among others.
