The study was conducted by a group of scientist from the Juntendo School of Medicine in Tokyo. The study was double-blinded, randomized controlled study including 30 healthy males.

Gout or the “rich man’s disease” has become more common in the recent years and is affecting about 1–2% of the Western population at some point in their lives. This rise is believed due to increasing risk factors in the population, such as metabolic syndrome, longer life expectancy and changes in diet and an increase in diseases associated with gout, such as high blood pressure. With the rising living standards globally gout has also become more common in other geographical areas, for example in China.

Gout is a medical condition characterized by acute inflammatory arthritis-a red, tender, hot, swollen joint. The most commonly affected joint is at the base of big toe; approximately 50% of cases are suffering of the podagra - “rich man’s disease in a poor man’s toe”.

Gout is caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. The uric acid crystallizes, and the crystals deposit in joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues. Treatments are lifestyle changes and medical treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs.

Melinjo Dimer Resveratrol has demonstrated in previous trials its strong anti-inflammatory effect and this was the first human study demonstrating the positive effect on uric acid levels in humans.
