Michelson Diagnostics (MDL) announces their sponsorship of the 2009 Hounsfield lecture. The annual Hounsfield memorial lecture was instituted by the Imperial College London Imaging Sciences Centre in 2004 to recognize the contribution of Sir Godfrey Hounsfield in the development of medical imaging systems.

The lecture has been designed as an opportunity for a world leading researcher in imaging science to review the latest developments in imaging science. This is supported by a range of posters produced by imaging related research groups at Imperial which demonstrate the scope and depth of research undertaken in this institution.

The 2009 lecture is to be presented by Professor James G. Fujimoto from the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences at MIT, who is the inventor and principal developer of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). His theme for the talk to be given on June 8th is Biomedical Imaging and Optical Biopsy with OCT.

Speaking recently in Paris, Professor Fuijimoto said Optical Coherence Tomography has become an invaluable instrument in clinical practice. Dramatic advances have been seen in this technology in the past few years, new developments will be seen in the near future and applications are constantly widening.

“At Michelson, we are honored to be associated with this year’s Hounsfield lecture and it is particularly exciting to have the inventor of OCT as this year’s lecturer”, said Jon Holmes, MDL’s CEO. “It will be interesting to listen to Professor Fujimoto’s perspective on the future of OCT and how it will open up new opportunities for radiologists and biomedical imaging.”
