Carlotta's Face: One Woman's Story of Overcoming Face Blindness With Art

This short animated film, co-directed by neuroscientist Valentin Riedl, tells the story of Carlotta, who uses art to overcome a rare brain condition that prevents her from recognizing faces.

Carlotta recounts her painful childhood, before face blindness was understood by society, before explaining how her amazing portfolio of over 1400 self portraits has helped her understand the contours and hills of her own face, which had remained a mystery to her beforehand.

About the directors: Valentin Riedl studied Medicine in Germany, France and Poland. In 2009, he received an M.D. degree from Technische Universität München (TUM), and a PhD in Systemic Neuroscience from Ludwig-Maximilians Universität (LMU) in 2012. Valentin’s engagement with film was a detour from the abstract world of scientific data into a sphere where anything is possible. Today, he aims at merging both fields, science and art, into unique ways of storytelling.
