Parathyroid tumours account for a very small percentage of all head and neck neoplasms. The clinical presentation of benign primary hyperparathyroidism differs from that seen in Western series. We attempt to review the presentation and outcomes of patients treated for malignant primary hyperparathyroidism from our centre and highlight the clinical clues to a early pre-operative diagnosis.

Nutritionally-induced differences in the metabolic profiles of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Saccharomyces cerevisae determined by 1H-NMR and cross model validation and permutation testing
Using cross validation, permutation and rank products statistical procedures we identified biomarker regions in proton spectra of polar metabolites extracted from the algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (light and dark grown) and from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisae (aerobically and anaerobically grown).

Modulation of sporadic colorectal cancer risk by polymorphisms and haplotypes of mismatch repair genes
A role of mismatch repair (MMR) in modulating colorectal cancer (CRC) was assessed by genotyping single nucleotide polymorphisms in five MMR genes in hospital-based case- control study. The TAG haplotype in hMSH6 (-556G>T-Ex1-145G>-IVS4-101G>C) decreased a risk of CRC and the GGG haplotype increased a risk of rectal cancer. Although no significant association was found for individual MMR polymorphisms, the hMSH6 haplotypes may modulate the risk of CRC in this population.

Genetic profile of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) grown under different O2 concentrations
The development of mammalian embryos during the early stages takes place in a hypoxic environment. After 11 weeks of pregnancy the mother’s blood begins to flow freely in the placental space increasing the partial pressure of oxygen [1-3]. Therefore, we hypothesized that in vitro growth of hESC in normoxic conditions (21% O2) may change the profile and differentiation potential of hESC.

Biosynthesis of Very Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Chicory
Very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLCPUFAs) are declining in reserves, since they are produced by oily fish. VLCPUFAs are important in human nutrition because they are responsible for the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, the regulation of cholesterol synthesis and its transport, and the maintenance of cellular membranes. This research aims to produce VLCPUFAs in edible plants.

Oligonucleotides with LNA and targeting of biologically important RNAs
Activity of RNA-targeting antisense oligonucleotides increases when introducing LNA monomers, implying that an 18 nucleotides long LNA/2OMe mixmer splice-switching oligonucleotide can be shortened to 12mer and have similar activity and specificity as an 18mer 2OMe oligonucleoyide. Positioning of LNA monomers has to be carefully considered when utilizing the potent LNA monomers in RNA-targeting antisense oligonucleotides.
