Biotech Support Group reports on a book published by Springer, a global publisher that serves and supports the research community. This book seeks to fill in the current technology gap with a specific collection of technologies developed for the study of protein function at a proteome scale. Written in the Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions, lists of materials and reagents, step-by-step protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and how to interpret results.

In addition to a co-editor role, the efforts of BSG in this book are highlighted in several chapters. First, BSG authors contributed the chapter entitled “Methods to Monitor the Functional Subproteomes of SERPIN Protease Inhibitors”. Although SERPINs are found in a variety of functional on/off sub-forms, customarily they are observed and reported in aggregate. As a result, their influence on disease is missed.

In another chapter entitled “Making the Case for Functional Proteomics”, Perkins describes the research work of BSG stating, “The outcome of their work, differentiation of cancer patients relative to controls, is of general interest for Functional Proteomics with a System Biology context…The analysis of their findings…deemed Stroma Liquid Biopsy, however, goes far beyond creating a simple list of differentiating proteins. Proteins from three interconnected pathways of networks emerged. Further, differentiation is heavily dependent on posttranslational modifications and control mechanisms of those modifications”.

Finally, in the chapter entitled “Proteases: Pivot Points in Functional Proteomics, authors Verhamme, Leonard, and Perkins describe BSG’s pioneering biomarker efforts in uncovering biological networks, rather than single entities. They write “… for cancer, ‘Stroma Liquid Biopsy™’ demonstrates a network (or pattern) - based analysis of LC/MS data, connecting multiple networks or pathways that rely profoundly on proteolytic activity (coagulation, complement, and inflammation)… Further, the identified subproteome(s) become a relevant test bed for screening new therapeutics”.
