Say “microbes” and many think of disease and illness, but microbes have an important role in maintaining our own health and that of our environment. Therefore, the more information we can uncover, the better armed researchers are to prevent and treat disease, protect and restore the environment and harness the key beneficial properties microbes offer.
In this list we will look at some of the recent advances that have enabled researchers to better understand microbial communities at the genomic level.

- How advances in sequencing technology are generating better data, more quickly and cheaply
- The importance of capturing the whole picture
- The value of integrating and sharing data
