Introduction
ISO/IEC17025:2017[1] is the international standard that specifies the general requirements for the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of laboratories. It can be used by laboratory customers, accreditation bodies, and other organizations to recognize the competence of laboratories. The key element of the standard is that it requires laboratories to demonstrate that they operate competently and can generate valid results. However, the latest version of the standard (2017) does not prescriptively state how this should be done; rather it encourages a risk-based approach. This requires organizations to assess the risks associated with the provisions of the standard and to show how the identified risks have been minimized. Key to this is the management of the laboratory process, the management of laboratory resources and the management of data that exists in, or is created by, the laboratory.
