The Cloud Computing Centre, the IT hosting specialist, has been selected by The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) to host its online portfolio systems for trainee and practicing surgeons - the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP) and the Surgeon’s Portfolio - in a secure location that can be accessed 24/7.

The Cloud Computing Centre will provide a stable cloud-based service for these two online portfolio systems, managed by The Royal College of Surgeons of England, and supported by high specification disaster recovery, data security and business resilience services.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is one of four Surgical Colleges which, along with Specialist Surgical Associations, represent surgeons in the UK and Ireland. The Surgical Colleges are responsible for the curriculum for all surgeons in training in the UK, which is managed by the Joint Committee on Surgical Training via the ISCP online system.

The postgraduate education and training regulator approved curriculum stipulated in 2007 that all trainee surgeons were to use the ISCP system to record their training placements, and log performance assessments. At the end of each training year, this information is used to assess whether a trainee surgeon can progression into the next year of surgical training.

After going through a formal tendering process, The Cloud Computing Centre was selected as the hosting supplier of choice. Julian Ford, Information Systems Manager at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, comments, “We were impressed by the Cloud Computing Centre’s security and flexibility; they took the time to listen to our particular requirements; assess the type of service we needed, and then implement a service which ultimately provides surgical trainees, and consultant surgeons, with quick and secure access to their professional data.”

The Cloud Computing Centre will also be hosting the Surgeon’s Portfolio, which is a system being piloted in preparation for the introduction of revalidation. Surgeons not in training will use this portfolio to record their Continual Professional Development (CPD) activities and other supporting information.
