The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is holding its 44th annual meeting, Neuroscience 2014, in Washington DC from November 15-19 2014.  A large meeting such as Neuroscience 2014 that attracts more than 30,000 attendees can be a little overwhelming. Here are some tips we put together to ensure you get everything you can out of the meeting!

Planning is Everything

With many concurrent events and sessions, planning is essential to get the most from your time at SfN.  Conference abstracts of posters, symposia, lectures, and social events are available via the neuroscience meeting planner and Neuroscience 2014 mobile app. Before you arrive, spend some time reviewing the sessions to identify posters and symposia that are relevant to your research.

This year SfN has also introduced curated itineraries for selected research topics. Take advantage of them! They cover the following areas: addiction research, neurobiology of visual processing, neurodegeneration, psychiatric disorders, sleep and circadian clocks, spinal cord, synapses and visual cognition and perception.

Networking Opportunities

From scientific sessions to sponsored socials, Neuroscience 2014 is a great place to network, establish collaborations, catch up with old friends or even interview for a new position. Don’t leave it to chance! If you really want to meet with someone, reach out to him or her and set up a meeting in advance.

Communicate your Data

If you are presenting a poster you will have a short amount of time to communicate your research; practice your ‘elevator pitch’ to draw fellow attendees in to learn more. Review these Ten Simple Rules for a Good Poster Presentation and Good Oral Presentations, as well as this article on effective communication of science without jargon.

Professional and Career Development

On Saturday November 15, SfN is hosting a series of meet the expert discussions, providing students and postdocs an informal environment to engage with experienced neuroscientists. Topics include From Brain to BrainGate and Back: Moving Between Basic and Applied Neuroscience, The Mind–Body Connection, Editing the Genome to Understand Genetic Contributions of Disease, and Exploring Ion Channel Structures and Gating Mechanisms Using Tarantula Toxins.

Other career development workshops will examine funding, publishing your research, teaching, networking and a discussion on success in academia. The Exhibit Hall

Browse the directory of neuroscience vendors, publishers, and organizations that will be exhibiting at Neuroscience 2014. Stroll through the exhibit hall and explore the booths to learn about new product releases relevant to your research, product updates, and special offers.
