This image shows a layer 2/3 pyramidal neuron from the mouse cerebral cortex, produced using confocal microscopy. The cerebral cortex is the largest and most well-developed region of the mammalian brain. It is a sheet of neural tissue forming the surface of the forebrain. The cerebral cortex plays a role in memory, attention, perceptual awareness, thought, language and consciousness. It is comprised of six horizontal layers, each of which has distinct neuronal compositions. 


The neuron's activity was recorded in an intact brain while DNA plasmids coding for different fluorescent proteins were delivered to the cell at the same time. After 5 days survival, the brain was sectioned and confocal microscopy images were taken of the different fluorescent proteins, which filled the neuron. Colour selective post-processing was done in Photoshop CS5.
