A Scientific Dating Game: Biologists Play RNA-Protein Matchmakers

News

Virtually all functions in our bodies require precise interactions between radically different types of molecules. A new study aims to understand how RNA molecules pair with intended protein partners. Researchers hope that they eventually will be able to predict and manipulate these partnerships that have been carved through millions of years of evolution.

Enzyme Motor Drives Neuron Death

News

Researchers have identified a protein at the head of a pathway that leads to neuronal death. They found that the enzyme HDAC1, normally in the nucleus of cells, is also present in the axons of some neurons. When a degenerative signal is activated, HDAC1 modifies a component of a molecular motor, which then drives a signaling agent down the axon to the neuron’s cell body, killing it.

Brown Fat Can Influence Muscle Function

News

Brown fat was only recently discovered in human adults, and its role remains unclear. Known to play an integral part in generating body heat and burning stored energy, its presence is linked to lower body weight and improved blood sugar levels. Now, endocrinologists have shown for the first time that brown fat can exert control over skeletal muscle function.
