Warnex Inc. announced that its subsidiary Warnex PRO-DNA Services Inc., located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is the recipient of funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) for the development of a forensics database, based on mitochondrial DNA, in collaboration with the Paleo-DNA Laboratory of Lakehead University.
"Mitochondrial DNA testing is a powerful tool being used to solve criminal cases, including cold cases, as well as to prove wrongful convictions," said Mark Busgang, President and CEO of Warnex.
"We appreciate the opportunity that this funding from the Ontario government will create and we are pleased to collaborate with Lakehead University to solidify our presence as two of the world's leading mitochondrial DNA testing laboratories."
Warnex PRO-DNA Services and the Paleo-DNA Laboratory of Lakehead University are the only two laboratories accredited in Canada for mitochondrial DNA testing.
With this funding, they will develop the MitoNorth Database, the first mitochondrial DNA database in Canada, which will be used by law enforcement and legal professionals to prevent individuals from being falsely accused and help prosecute criminals. The two laboratories received a total of $676,100 in funding from NOHFC for the development of the MitoNorth Database.
