While Neuroscience 2021’s in-person offering was cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the conference is still going ahead online November 8-11.

The ease of switching between online sessions – and the Society for Neuroscience’s (SFN) dedicated session planner – makes finding specific topics straightforward. However, there are still a dizzying number of plenaries, symposia and posters to sift through. Here, we pick a few highlights from the final day of the conference. All times CST.

A01 - 50th Dual Perspectives — Studying Human Neurodevelopment and Diseases Using 3D Organoids and Assembloids

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM, November 11

A change from the more didactic side of the conference, dual perspective sessions see two speakers present their case for each side of a debate within neuroscience. In this session, Icahn School of Medicine’s Kirsten Brennand and Sergiu Pasca from Stanford University will discuss the contributions of iPSC-derived neural cells, organoids and assembloids.

L12 - Special Lecture — Stress Contagion, Shadows, and Synaptic Imprinting

1:30 PM - 2:15 PM, November 11

The last 20 or so months has been a stressful time for many of us. We each respond to stress in different ways, a result of a complex interplay between components of our endocrine system. This special lecture, given by Professor Jaideep Bains of the University of Calgary, will look in depth at how our plastic brains respond to stress at the molecular level.

L11 - Presidential Special Lecture — Integration of Mind and Metabolism

3:30 PM - 4:30 PM, November 11

Rounding off the conference is a special lecture from Yale School of Medicine Professor Dana Small. In it, Small will challenge the notion that our cravings for food are driven by external prompts, but rather subliminal metabolic signals from the gut to the brain.
