Dr. Wout Bittremieux is an assistant professor in the Adrem Data Lab at the University of Antwerp, Belgium and a world-leading expert in computational mass spectrometry. He leads a research team that develops advanced artificial intelligence and bioinformatics tools to analyze mass spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics data. Wout earned his PhD in computer science from the University of Antwerp in 2017, with additional research experience at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He furthered his expertise through postdoctoral appointments at the University of Washington, US and the University of California San Diego, US. His work has been widely published in top-tier journals, including Nature Methods, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Machine Intelligence and Nature Communications. Throughout his career, Dr. Bittremieux has received numerous awards, such as the Postdoctoral Career Development Award from the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the “Rising Star in Proteomics and Metabolomics” by the Journal of Proteome Research. He also won the Early Career Researcher Manuscript Competition by the Human Proteome Organization, the Bioinformatics for Mass Spectrometry Award from the European Proteomics Association and the Metabolites Young Investigator Award. An active leader in the scientific community, Dr. Bittremieux chairs the Quality Control working group of the Proteomics Standards Initiative, leads the Computational Mass Spectrometry group within the International Society for Computational Biology, and is a core member of the European Bioinformatics Community for Mass Spectrometry.
